Malacañang on Thursday welcomed a proposal of a lawmaker to temporarily make use of ABS-CBN’s radio and TV frequencies to provide distance learning modalities to students for the upcoming academic year.

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque, however, said it will be up to the Department of Education (DepED) and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) to make the final decision.

“It’s a good idea pero ito po ay dedesisyunan ni [DepEd] Secretary Leonor Briones at ni [CHED] Chairman Popoy [de Vera],” Roque said in an online briefing.

House Deputy Speaker Luis Raymund Villafuerte filed House Resolution 1044 proposing that educators deliver their teaching modules on the signals vacated by ABS-CBN after they failed to secure a new legislative franchise.

He said they may also be used to disseminate information on coronavirus disease (COVID-19) prevention and control, risk-reduction and preparedness.

ABS-CBN was forced to stop its radio and TV operations on May 5, a day after its franchise expired.

The media network was permanently shut down by a decision of a House panel, denying its bid for a 25-year legal franchise to operate.
