The Philippine Embassy in the UAE recently issued a clarification on statements that the Philippine government will be shouldering fines of overstaying overseas Filipinos in the UAE.

Department of Foreign Affairs Undersecretary for Migrant Workers’ Affairs Sarah Arriola earlier stated that the government helps those who have overstayed in the UAE by paying their fines.

“The Undersecretary was referring to immigration penalties and other related charges in highly meritorious cases related to securing exit visas or passes,” as per the statement from the Embassy.

These include distressed Filipino nationals who have immigration cases because they left their employers, have absconded and are in the process of being deported.

The Undersecretary for Migrant Workers Affairs cited during the meeting of the House Committee on Public Accounts that the department is wary of the depleting funds for its Assistance-to-Nationals Fund that it uses for repatriation. To date, only Php232,948,881 of the Php1 billion is left.

However, Usec Arriola still affirmed that the government is doing everything in its power to ensure that all Filipinos who wish to head back to the Philippines will arrive home safely.
